Hey there Jack, hope all is well over there in Australia!.

i have a curiosity!.

What kind of periodization is implemented in vertical mastery?
From what i'm understanding each cycle is divided into 2 blocks of 4 weeks each, after which another "cycle" starts based on the progress of the athlete.
What was that made you pick this option? =)
In my mind i have a periodization scheme that is the same that you explained in your article about linear periodization...now, usually one full linear periodized schedule is based on a whole year planning and usually it takes for granted the preparation towards the season but when i approached Vertical Mastery i noticed the structure is different and i had a question mark on my head :D .

I'm asking your opinion on this because i don't just want to take things for granted blindly... i would like to learn from the logic behind VM in order to improve my planning skills as well...i'm just curious.

Have a nice day Jack! Take care

Hi Marco

Great question. Excellent to hear you are thinking through the issues rather than blindly accepting things people tell you. I wish more people would do this, not just in regards to training, but in regards to lots of issues in life. I could wax lyrical about this for a while but I won't waste your time with my musings and instead get down to answering the question.

Why did I choose the approach I did? The reason the software is set up into essentially 10 week stints (2 x 4 week programs plus 2 weeks of deload) is because this is usually enough time to make noticeable changes to an athletes power profile.

Sometimes when you have an athlete on the extremes (either very strong or very explosive) it can take longer to reach the right balance of strength and speed and they will need to focus on particular areas for longer, but for the most part you can make good changes in a 10 week period.

Interesting side note here I had an athlete complain because the software built him 3 straight programs consisting mostly of jumping and explosive strength drills. At the start of his first program he was squatting 2.3x BW and at the start of his third program he was squattng 2.15X BW. His vertical increased by 5 inches the first program and 3 inches the second.

People can get obsessed by strength numbers and in this case he was worried because his strength was slowly going down. I did point out that he was following a VERTICAL JUMP program and his VERTICAL JUMP numbers were improving. If he wanted a strength program then that is a different story.

Anyway, what is a power profile? I am not sure if this is an official training term but I use it when I am assessing an athlete to determine their primary training needs.

Essentially I am referring to how strong they are relative to body weight and how explosive/reactive they are compared to a standing vertical jump. Then I am comparing these two indicators to each other to determine which area needs greater attention.

There are other factors built into the software such as imbalance between left and right legs, and running jump height v standing jump height but these are given a lower rating then the key power profile indicators mentioned above.

The periodization isn't based on linear periodization as you are right, linear periodization is more suited to people who have a definitive competitive season.

Vertical Mastery is written for people who just want to jump high which is a much different prospect than someone who is constrained by the need to peak at a certain time (competition season).

The other reason I took the approach I did is because it is the most effective. This is not in dispute by any coach in any sport. Want to improve the fastest way possible - work on your weaknesses.

A person who competes in track and field can still use Vertical Mastery but once they get past the beginner stages I would recommend that they join a club and get a coach and work with them.

For someone who wants to dunk, get more blocks, or get better at Volleyball though, something like Vertical Mastery is ideal.

I hope this helps explain a bit further the logic of the software.

Kind regards

Questo sicuramente vi aiuterà a capire meglio il motivo dietro al quale il creatore di VM ha fatto la sua scelta.
